On a pastry-ice cream-coffee mission in the Mission

This afternoon I pushed aside my books and hit the streets of San Francisco’s Mission district with my sister and her boyfriend, who are visiting from New York City.  Our goal?  To sample as much pastry, ice cream and coffee as humanly possible.  We started at the 24th St BART and headed toward pie.  Here’s an overview:

Stop 1. Mission Pie

We kicked off the day by ordering up one slice of Lemon Shaker (highlight: full slices of lemon cooked in the pie!) and one of Walnut.  Each was selling for $3.14 in honor of Pi day.  Amazing.  I’m looking forward to going back and sampling some of their savory pies.

Stop 2 (sort of). Dynamo Donuts

Boo…another reason to dislike Mondays.

Stop 3. Humphry Solocombe

There are lots of fun and unusual flavors at HS (there’s got to be a pronounceable nickname, right?).  Here’s Teel with two little tasting spoons, carefully deciding between Secret Breakfast (bourbon and cornflakes) and Lemon Buttermilk.  Eventually we settled on one scoop of Secret Breakfast and another of Olive Oil.  Yum…

Stop 4. Ritual Coffee Roasters

This was my first trip to Ritual, which has a cult following around the Bay.  They serve pour over coffee (aka fancy drip).  It’s good, but it’s also $3 – $4.50/cup, depending on the roast.

Stop 5. Tartine Bakery

We ate wayyy too much at Tartine: asparagus quiche, lemon tart, lemon meringue cake and a walnut drop.  I even thought about buying their gorgeous bread cookbook.

Stop 6. Bi-Rite Creamery

Not to be slowed down by Tartine, we ordered a scoop of Brown Sugar with Ginger Caramel and a scoop of Ricaneles (cinnamon ice cream with snickerdoodles).  As fantastic as this ice cream is, at this point I was starting to lose enthusiasm for over-consumption.

Stop 7. Four Barrel Coffee

Thankfully, this was our last stop of the day.  We recounted our favorites over cups of French-pressed coffee, freshly roasted at the back of the store.

Tomorrow: eating all vegetables, in an attempt to counteract today’s sugar, fat and caffeine overload!
